The work
This site holds writing I am still learning how to make. Some of it takes the form of stories, some of it essays, and some of it remains as notes that haven’t decided what they are yet.
Across all of it, I’m interested in moments before things are resolved—before a sound becomes a song, before sensation becomes judgment, before time turns into explanation. I’m not trying to teach or persuade. I’m trying to notice.
The writer
I’m Dan Leonard, a writer who came to this work late, after a long life spent paying attention in other ways. I live near the coast in North Carolina, where walking, weather, and water have taught me more about patience than any plan ever did. I’m a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. This is the first time I’ve gathered my writing in one space.
How to read this site
You don’t need to read everything here, and there’s no right order. Some pieces are finished. Many are not. If something holds your attention, that’s enough. If it doesn’t, you can leave it where it is.
